Role of 3D Ultrasound for evaluating Acute Abdominal Conditions
For the last few years, I am working with 3D ultrasound for evaluating organic lesions. 3D ultrasound is commonly used to evaluate normal & abnormal luminal structures like gall bladder, urinary bladder etc. along with its use in obstetrics and cardiology. More emphasis should be given to use real time 3D sonography for diagnosing solid organ lesions.
During my last night emergency duty, a female patient came with the history of amenorrhoea for 3 months with a positive pregnancy test. Patient came with severe lower abdominal pain, predominantly on the right side along with per-vaginal bleeding.
On first impression on pelvic ultrasound, complex structures along with mild fluid was noted at the cervical region, made a confusion with the chance of overlapping ectopic adnexal pregnancy which may also show same appearance. Confusion could not be easily excluded with transverse & longitudinal sections.
As the patient was shouting with severe pain, a rapid 3D ultrasound evaluation made it easy to exclude possible differential diagnoses. Real time 3D ultrasound showed an irregular mass like retained products at the cervical canal. Whole endometrium was well evaluated along with the products. Patient’s both ovary appeared normal.
In our country, 3D ultrasound needs to be practiced more for evaluating abdominal pathologies to start a new advanced era. I will try to give you more updates on my experiments. Keep in touch.
Pictures given, are captured with phone camera due to shortage of time. Sorry for the poor quality. I will try to post better images next time.
Thank you.
